About Biotechnology Finishing School (BTFS)

Biotech Finishing School is a unique initiative in India with enhanced placement opportunities in Biotech Sector. BTFS program is launched by Govt, of Karnataka, in association with Government of India. The course offers different specializations in reputed Institutions across the State.

BTFS Concept

The fast growing biotechnology sector in Karnataka has been facing severe shortage of industry-ready graduates and post-graduates for a long time. In an effort to fulfill the needs of the industry, the Karnataka government in association with the Vision Group, ABLE and Industry representatives has developed a mechanism to provide employment opportunities in the sector. In the Millennium Biotech Policy-II, the Government of Karnataka initiated establishment of finishing school program across the state.

JSS BTFS was established in the year 2011-12 in Mysore, Karnataka with appropriate course content and duration to equip graduates and post-graduates with necessary employable skills and to make them industry ready in the specialization area – Protein Expression and Scale-up. The BTFS program commences in the month of September every year. Applications are called from interested students across India for admission into Postgraduate Diploma in BTFS for the academic session during July-August as KBAT (Karnataka Biotechnology Aptitude Test) by Govt. of Karnataka. Admissions are through an online entrance test followed by an interview.

DBT (Department of Biotechnology), Govt. of India is sponsoring Rs. 10,000/- as fellowship per student per month in an effort to empower human resource in Biotechnology sector through BTFS.

Objectives

• Educate & empower human resource to bridge the employability gap between industry & academia
• Train graduates and post graduates of life sciences to be industry ready for employment (see below for eligibility criteria)
• Create Biotechnology R & D environment in BTFS institutions
• Secure internship slots during the program and help in placements after program completion
