About the Department:

Department was established in 1964 with B.Sc., CBZ Combination.

  • B.Sc., BBM (Botany, Biochemistry, and Microbiology) combination was started during 1993.
  • Department offers Add-on-Course / Career Oriented Course in Horticulture from 2004 onwards.

Vision: 

To provide quality education for students in the domain of plants & be able to make them “Go-green & Grow Green”.

Mission: 

Be Herbal, do Herbal and go Herbal.

Activities: 

Signature activity of the department is surveying and documentation of plants which are the most important natural resources for the survival of living organisms including human beings. The Department of Botany always strive for the overall upliftment of students, according to the established credentials of the institution. Faculty members are involved in motivating students in developing leadership qualities by way of organising collection trips, educational tours, group discussions, seminars, and quiz, literary & cultural activities. The faculty members also actively guide students pertaining to competitive exams, research and for interviews of campus selection.

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.,) with the following combinations

  • CBZ – Chemistry, Botany & Zoology
  • BBM – Botany, Biochemistry & Microbiology
  • Add on Course in Horticulture.

Programme Objectives:

  • Curriculum development: The curriculum made for the betterment of the students enhance the ability and thinking power.
  •  Academic orientation: To provide thorough knowledge about various plant groups from primitive to highly evolved.
  •  Social Interaction: Due to students with skills related to continuous field visits in the laboratory as well as field based interior regions students interact with the social activities study.
  • To make the students to develop awareness regarding applications of different plants in various industries.
  •  Effective Citizenship: Being the students of botany, they have to communicate with many people hence they become more familiar as well as interactive.
  • Ethics: The subject teaches students about the ethical approach, not to cut the plants unnecessarily.
  •  Environment and Sustainability: conservation practices are studied for sustainable development.
  • To create the student awareness about conservation and sustainable use of plants.
  •  To facilitate students for taking up and shaping a successful career in Botany

Programme Outcomes:

  1. BSc Botany, Zoology and Chemistry course as well as BSc Botany, Biochemistry and Microbiology enables the students to take up advanced studies in the respective subjects.
  2. The main goal of the BSc degree in any subject is to develop a deeper understanding of natural laws, inquiring about the reasons and logics which govern them through established methods of observation, modelling, experimentation and calculations. This makes BSc degree a very important weapon in the society and opens a plethora of opposite for future studies, research as well as lucrative employment opportunities across the globe.
  3. Career   opportunities (job opportunities) for BSc CBZ.
  • After completing BSc degree, one can get employed in non scientific sectors in addition to scientific sectors. They can seek out for career in research laboratories, Government Corporation, banking and finance sectors and so on.
  • Apart from this science graduates can also find jobs in IT industry, business, BPO, marketing and so on.
  • They have wide range of options available in terms of subjects, topics, fields and associated area. BSc graduates can opt to join a post graduate level degree programme in their respective field or ailed subject to peruse further studies.
  • Some students have also been known to opt for non science master degree programme like journalism, animation, computer technology, management, hospitality sector and many others as their field of study after completion of their BSc graduation.
  • The BSc programme enabled the student to enhance their critical thinking during their three year period of study and the curriculum stimulates the mental thoughts and assumptions of the students. This helps the students to take up practical work and compare the results with their assumptions, there by leading to accuracy and validity of the practical knowledge. This analysis leads to take decisions at intellectual, organization and personal from different perspectives of life.
  • This course enables the student to take up advanced studies in Chemistry, Botany and Zoology and can find opportunities

Curriculum :

The present scheme and syllabus are under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

Laboratory facilities:

  • Well equipped laboratory with 15 working slabs
  • Well groomed museum with 700 plant specimens(Wet & dry specimens)
  • Printed, Categorised & numbered Bio-visual charts (total of 150 charts)
  • Physiological, Ecological, Phytological & Microbiological lab equipments, in the latest available models & versions to give hands on training to students, enabling them to compete at all levels.
  • Herbarium housing 100s of herbarium sheets arranged according to the accepted system of classification
  • Access to centralised laboratory equipped with PCR, Geldock & Fluorescent Microscope
