Education plays pivot role in the path of individual’s life and moulds the individual’s character by inculcating high ideas and humane values. Only education can help the younger generation to become the responsible citizens of this Country.
Upholding these great ideals, J.S.S College of Arts Commerce and Science, Ooty road Mysore, has started M.Sc. Physics programme from the academic year 2011-2012 under the aegis of JSS Mahavidyapeetha, with the blessings of His Holiness Jagadguru Sri Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji. The starting of the programme is in tune with the objectives of JSS Mahavidyapeetha of providing an impetus to the study of basic sciences.
The M.Sc Physics programme consists of four semesters under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) with Continuous Assessment Grading Pattern (CAGP). The course contents include Hardcore, Soft-core, Discipline Specific Elective, Open Elective and Project work. Specialisation in Solid State Physics has-been introduced in the academic year 2011-12 itself. Specialisation in Nuclear Physics is being introduced from the academic year 2017-18.

Eligibility for Admission: B.Sc. with Physics and Mathematics as Major/ Optional subjects or B.Sc. Ed. degree of RIE Mysuru with Physics as a special subject and must have obtained a minimum of 45% (40% in case of SC / ST and Category-I candidates) of marks in cognate / optional subjects put together from all the years of the examination of the course.
Research Centre Recognition: The Post Graduate Department of Physics is recognised as Research Centre to carryout research leading to Ph.D degree in Physics of University of Mysore.

Programme Outcomes:
- acquired substantial knowledge in physics, basic knowledge in mathematics, and knowledge in supported fields like computer science
- The work with the specialisation in Solid State Physics / Nuclear Physics gives special expertise within one of the areas of specialisation represented at the PG Department of Physics.
- had some research experience within a specific field of physics, through a supervised project (the Master Thesis)
- are familiar with contemporary research within various fields of physics.
- The Master of Science in Physics programme provides the candidate with knowledge, general competence, and analytical skills on an advanced level, needed in industry, consultancy, education, research, or public administration.
- Can combine and use knowledge from other disciplines.
- Can critically and independently assess and evaluate research methods and results.
- Understands the role of physics in society and has the background to consider ethical problems.
