Credit Matrix and Course of Study

The present scheme and syllabus under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and Continuous Assessment Grading Pattern (CAGP) is as given in the table below. Students are provided extensive opportunities to deliver seminars. A dissertation and project work will provide an opportunity to test student's learning leading to research.

Research Activities

The Department is actively involved in research in the field of antioxidant biology, neurosciences, macular degeneration, mushroom proteomics and clinical aspects of stress physiology. The Department has received extramural research grants from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Govt. of India, Vision Group on Science and Technology, Govt. of Karnataka and University Grants Commission, SWRO, Bangalore to the tune of 87 lakhs.

A new, multi-purpose lab for use by postgraduate and doctoral students is available. The facility includes

Instrumentation Lab with new ventilation exhausts hoods and new laboratory furniture. 

The instrumentation facility is strengthened by addition of Spectrofluorimeter, Bio-safety Cabinet, CO2 Incubator, HPLC, Gas Chromatography and Lyophilizer

Bioinformatics Lab

The laboratory can accommodate 45 students who can work in groups and each group is provided with locked storage space for their individual materials.

As in all laboratories, safety is a paramount issue, and there is a separate and secure preparation room and storage area within the lab to accommodate the supplies of chemicals and equipment that are used during the teaching process.

Research Centre Recognition

The Department is recognized as Research Centre to carry out research leading to Ph.D. Degree in Biochemistry of University of Mysore through JSS Research Foundation.

The Department has entered into MoU with JSS University, Mysuru for pursuing research in Biomedical Sciences leading to Ph.D. Degree.
