About the Department

The department of Geography was started in the year 1964. With a view to give Knowledge about physical world. This subject is being taught as one of the optional subjects at BA level. The undergraduate programme is adopted the CBCS pattern. The syllabus is thoroughly restructured to suit the present changing needs of the society keeping this in view. We have introduced core papers such as Physical Geography, Human Geography, General Cartography and Environmental Geography. Choice papers have been introduced for V and VI semester students namely, For V semester (DSE-I) - Geography of India or Economics Geography. (SEC-I) - Regional Planning and Development or Remote Sensing and GPS based project report. For VI semester                   

(DSE-II) -  Disaster Management or Geography of Tourism. (SEC-II)  - GIS based Project Report or Field Techniques and Survey based Project Report.

In the Practical component - Contour Diagrams and Meteorological Instruments, Interpretation of Topographical maps and Indian daily weather maps, Map Projection, Applications of  Statistical methods in Geography, Fundamental of GIS, Computer mapping(Digital Cartography) and GPS Surveying are carried out with the help of computers application. All the above are taught with the help of computer soft wares such as Map info and MS Excel.

Department of Geography is a full fledged and consists of well equipped two laboratories with PPT facilities and a spacious GIS lab having 22 systems with UPS backup.

Laboratory facilities : The  department  has  2 Geography Lab and 01 Geography of Information System Lab.

Programme  Objectives  Of B A Geography

1. Intellectual development
2. Knowledge of the world and broadening of outlook of the students
3. It aims at the  development of the qualities of co-operation, generosity and sympathetic outlook.
4. Geography also aims at the development of the quality of adjustment with the environment.
5. It also aims at bringing about economic efficiency in the students.
6. Teaching of Geography aims at development of mental faculties like power of reasoning, invention, discovery etc.
7. It is  also responsible for the development of balanced personality.
8. It aims at development in the students love for nation, travels and knowledge about countries.
9. It also  helps them to acquire knowledge of natural resources.
10. Teaching of Geography   also aims at the study of the influence of geographical factors on man.
11. It also aims at the study of geographical elements in the development of human civilization.

Program Outcomes

On Completion of the BA (Geography) Students are able to:

1.  Serve as a Geographer
2.  Work as a teacher in schools and high schools
3.  Serve as conservator  in the  forest, Soil and  Agriculture  Departments.
4.  Work in disaster and water resources management.
5.  Serve as cartographer in map making divisions of Government
6.  Work in NGOs.
7.  Digitizer in GIS based companies
8.  It helps for Competitive exam

Course Structure (2017-18 onwards)

Assessment Maximum marks - 100

Note:

1. C1 will be conducted for 20 Marks (Theory) with one Hour duration, 10 Marks (Lab) with continuous assessment and it will be reduced to assigned marks.
2. C2 will be conducted for 20 Marks (Theory) with one Hour duration, 10 Marks (Lab) with continuous assessment and it will be reduced to assigned marks.
3. C3 will be conducted for 70 Marks (Theory) with three Hour duration, 70 Marks (Lab) with 3 Hour duration and to be reduced to assigned marks.
4. For non-practical SEC, course C1 and C2 will be conducted for 15 Marks each with one Hour duration and will be reduced to 30 marks. C3 will be conducted for 70 Marks (Theory) with three Hour duration, and will be retained.
5. In case of Project Based SEC, C1 and C2 will be conducted for 15 Marks each with one Hour duration and will be reduced to 30 marks. C3 will be conducted 70 Marks ( 50 Marks for dissertations work and 20 Marks for viva)   with 3 Hour duration, and to be reduced to assigned marks.
